Lingering Presence
My art has grown into a kind of therapy; channeling fear, internal battles, mental states, and emotionally-charged experiences into color and form. I ask questions like: how can I transform my painting practice into a vulnerable exploration of the mind? And how can I illustrate my ugliest parts and feel safety in that fear? In another way, this work was an experiment to see how far I could get from what I thought I could accomplish.
Daydreaming and intuitive thought became a teacher and a muse. When I begin painting, I gradually enter a meditative state and listen intently to the visions and thoughts in my mind that I associate with my current feelings or situations. My hand follows the direction the paint is telling me to go, and I listen for moments when a color demands its presence somewhere. Repeated symbols and shapes are also used to represent a certain energy I’m trying to convey and connect multiple pieces together. I know a painting is complete when I feel like the story has been told in its fullness, and more work would only skew its nature.
